Kaleidoscope

Pend Oreille Arts Council

The Kaleidoscope art education program is a collaboration between POAC, volunteer adult instructors, and the Lake Pend Oreille School District as well as other Bonner County elementary schools.  It provides visual arts instructions for students in the third through sixth grades (approximately 500 students in 2017-2018) through once-a-month, classroom-based lessons.

The Essential Question that guided our projects’ focus was:

Student learning focused on learning the basics of visual arts education as they created original art during each lesson.

Students learned the basics of visual arts; realized their artistic visions through creating their own art work; answered questions about the art lessons as posed by the instructor; and gained an understanding on a personal level of what each type of art/medium studied meant to them.

At the conclusion of the project, students responded to questions related to the identified Standards:

The Kaleidoscope program corresponds to Idaho State Core Standards and the National Core Arts Standards.  Students were asked, and responded to, questions about the visual arts related to these identified standards.

Impact

At the end of the school year, students had a portfolio of art work they had created during the Kaleidoscope program..  In addition, they learned about the essential concepts of visual arts.

Reflection

Students gained a deeper understanding of the power of the visual arts throughout history and in their own lives.  In addition, they were able able to be proud of their original art work.
