Education Initiatives

Salmon Arts Council

The mission of the Salmon Arts Council (SAC)-now serving members of our community for over 37 years- is to foster growth and appreciation of the arts and humanities in Lemhi County. In support of this mission, SAC will use the funding from ICA to support the development of art-based education initiatives that will benefit students in grades K-12 as well as education initiatives for out of school youth. The funding will also support visual, musical, and theatrical arts education programs for over 1,000 students in 6 schools, home schooled youth and our developmentally disable student population, while the community arts education programs will reach 325 community youth and residents in Lemhi County. The key learning goal of the SAC arts education initiative is to foster high order critical thinking skills through creativity and artistry. The arts have the potential to make a huge impact on the academic, creative and behavioral development of youth. The goal of the SAC is to provide important arts education while also helping schools meet their much-needed academic goals as well as help students achieve artistically, academically and developmentally.

The Essential Question that guided our projects’ focus was:

What is key learning goal of the Salmon Arts Council education initiative?

The key learning goal of the SAC arts education initiative is to foster high order critical thinking skills through creativity and artistry. The arts have the potential to make a huge impact on the academic, creative and behavioral development of youth. The goal of the SAC is to provide important arts education while also helping schools meet their much-needed academic goals as well as help students achieve artistically, academically and developmentally.

In order to foster critical thinking skills through creativity, the SAC has used either local artist or used educational out reach programs to meet arts education needs of our community.

At the conclusion of the project, students responded to questions related to the identified Standards:

The high school students whom participated in Idaho Shakespeare Festival-Shakespearience found that adapting scenes from a play with a modern twist allow them to understand the play Macbeth better than when they read the play during English class. The student also learned about memorizing lines and timing of speaking between the actors. The students also learned about how production time lines help with the staging of a play.

Salmon Arts Council presented local artist to the Lemhi 21st Century after-school program. The students learned about painting with different mediums-water colors, acrylics and oils. We also had a local artist teach this group of children how to use various textiles and supplies to create Valentine’s cards.

Impact

After Shakespearience, one student stated while he enjoyed acting in high school plays, he would like to be an actor which participated with the Idaho Shakespeare Festival-Shakespearience in order to help other students understand Shakespeare plays and why the plays are relevant to modern society.

Some of the students from Lemhi 21st after-school program used the knowledge of the different painting mediums and textiles to make artistically creative Valentine’s and discovered that crafting was also another form of the arts.

Reflection

The Salmon Arts Council feels that if we enlighten one student at a time we have served our mission. We will continue to bring arts and humanities to Lemhi county in order to make a huge impact on the academic, creative and behavioral development of youth of our area.
