Cultural Community: Gambian
Artform: West African music, Djembe
Bio: Muntaga started drumming at the young age of five. By learning from master drummers in his home country, Gambia, drumming quickly became his first love. With much dedication, practicing and teaching others constantly, Muntaga has risen to the status of a Master Drummer. He considers music to be his passion, connecting him to his heritage and as a medium to address the world. According to Muntaga, “by using my hands, I beat the drum and express my experiences showing the different tones one could achieve from the Djembe drum. The different styles of African rhythm are cultural and part of my African heritage.” For Muntaga, the sound of the djembe is unique. He said: “The djembe is an instrument of great simplicity, it is made of goat hide stretched over a piece of hollowed wood. With bare hands or a stick, a player can get a great diversity of sounds.” Taga believes it is important to pass on the ancient tradition of drumming because it is a part of everyday family and community life, ceremonies, and celebrations.
