Cultural Community: Cowboy
Artform: Leather/rawhide gear
Residence: Southwest Idaho
Bio: Deana grew up around horses and cattle and was a self-taught leather tooler until 1993 when she apprenticed with Don Brown, a saddle maker from Garden Valley. Since she rides registered quarter horses in reining discipline and has built a few saddles, she can appreciate the need for gear that is comfortable for the animal, durable, and aesthetically pleasing. Her work is in high demand; she has developed her own unique style, developing a 3-D style of picture carving that has been well received. Deana has taught leather carving at Treasure Valley Community College, through 4-H, and Tandy Leather Co. She is also an accomplished rawhide braider. Deana has established herself as a true master and has a track record of success in such diverse areas of leather craft as design, pattern development, implementing new techniques and refining established ones, carving and stamping, as well as honing her skills with leather and rawhide braid work, even producing her own rawhide. She is known as a disciplined teacher with a warm and friendly nature, eager to see her students’ skills grow and develop.
