Born in Chicago, Pete was raised in Southern California amidst the intersection (one might argue, collision) of several subcultures that included surfing, low riders, hot rods, movie celebrities, the high culture of opera, ballet and the philharmonic vs. the low culture of roadside architecture, amusement parks and flea markets. As a college art student in serious need of cash, a friend suggested he photograph the dress rehearsal for a production of West Side Story at the local college. Always the kid who could draw and paint, he explained that he didn't own a camera and, even if he did, he didn't really know how to use one. The friend told him not to worry, loaned him his camera, gave a few instructions and helped develop the film and print some proof sheets. He showed the proofs to the cast the next night and four hundred and fifty dollars in orders later, decided that photography might not be a bad way to make a living.

In the middle of a successful career involving an industrial application of photography, Pete moved to Idaho in 1994 and continued art as a sideline. "Moving to Idaho really changed my art making", Pete explains. "The light and color here altered my palette, and the dominance of the landscape forced a change in subject matter. I had a deep reservoir of imagery from my youth that I started to combine with elements from the natural world. It was a struggle at first to reconcile the two, but turning to photography from painting and drawing has created a sort of bridge that connects these elements in a satisfying way. Although I'm never completely content with my work, I like what I'm doing now more than at any time in the past."

Pete now operates a successful commercial and editorial photography business and continues his experiments in digital photomontage. He has been awarded a grant from the Idaho Commission on the Arts to help fund a recent exhibition at the College of Idaho. He is represented by the House Gallery in Salt Lake City.
